The Bridge also known as IL Ponte was established by 5 traditional craftsmen and women in 1969 in Florence Italy. The Bridge is named after the area in Florance near where they first started their production of the beautiful crafted leathergoods - namely the bridge over the river Arno in Florence called the "Ponte Vecchio" - Ponte Vecchio is Italian for "old bridge". This bridge is believed to date back to Roman times. Today it is home to Art Dealers, Jewellers and gift shops - traditionally it was home to Butchers, Grocers and other more basic merchants
The Bridge handbags, wallets and purses are known for their superior quality and beauty as they wear and get older, this is down to the Italian bull leather used and secondly down to the traditional vegetal tanning and dying method using a tree bark based tanning and dying solutions - where the leather is tanned in traditional oak barrels and rotated for many hours until the correct finish is acquired. The dying of the leather is done using wollen pads applying the dye by hand and finally finishing the top surface with amber rollers this gives the leather a shiny translucent finish which is a renowned tradition in Florence and also a dying art, very few companies investing in such a time and labour intensive process.
The Bridge wanted a style that has a truely English feel with an Italian flair for design and as such has a very classic timeless appeal - some of the handbag designs have been in the collection since the lates 1960's and are still as popular today as they were then.
